I have a couple of questions for all you moms out there.
1. How do you keep your babies warm at night without using bulky blankets? (or do you think it is okay to use blankets)? I have been swaddling Addie from day one so she has stayed plenty warm but I am stopping the swaddling. She woke up this morning with ice cubes for hands and I felt so bad, but I have no idea how to keep them warm at night and I stress that she will kick her blankets over her face or something...I know I need to just chill, but any tips would be greatly appreciated.
2. I am starting Addie on solids in the next week or so and I was wondering how often and when do you feed them solids? Do you feed her solids right before/after a feeding or just anytime? Once or twice a day? etc.
I am new to all this and like to hear how other moms do things!

Em. Molly would never stay swaddled so I always just put her in warm jammies. I use a blanket too, i just lay it on top. I don't use way heavy ones though, plus Molly is big enough now that she can pull them off her face, Addie probably could too. You could just get a little portable heater for Addie's room though. Now solids... I feed Molly twice a day. It started out being right when she woke up and right before she went to sleep but now its just kinda whenever works with our schedule. Hope that helps! Merry Christmas!
Yeah warm pjs and a light blanket over their belly and legs, I try not to put it over their arms and chest. You feed solids after their milk because milk is still their main source . I started just once a day for dinner, then a month later did breakfast and dinner, then at 8-9 months did three meals. A great site is wholesomebabyfood.com. O and I never did rice I just went straight to veggies sometimes I mix a little baby oatmeal in. Hope that helps!
I put both Marek and Ammon in sleep sacks to go to bed. I didn't know that is what they were called but I just googled it and it seems to be the right word. The ones without sleeves I used in the summer but in the winter I have them with long sleeves. The one I am using now I think could be a snowsuit really! It has a hood and legs instead of a sack but it is really warm and thick. Then under that they just have thin regular pjs. I don't use blankets cuz one time Marek started screaming cuz it was tangled around him in the middle of the night and it freaked me out. Plus they always kick off their blankets so they were always cold. Marek, now that he is in a big bed, just goes in normal pjs but I did the sack until he was like 18 months or so! As with food, I fed them about once per day, usually at dinner cuz it makes the sleep better at night cuz they are more full and just a little bit. breast milk or formula mixed with rice cereal. i fed it after they nursed because the milk is the most important because that is where they get all their nutrition. once they start getting better at the spoon and they enjoy it I start on veggies (veggies first! cuz it isn't as sweet. ive found if you feed fruit first they may not like the veggies later). just make sure once you give them solids to stick to one food (like peaches) for a couples days before switching to another food to make sure she isn't allergic (i doubt she would be but this is what docs say is best). well, hope that helps!! merry christmas! i would have emailed you this long thing but i dont know your email!
(i dont put the hood on them cuz they dont like it and theyd probably get too hot and with the food once a day that is just in the beginning.. then it moves to like 3-5 times a day!)
haha this is like what ammon wears now. like i said though, i dont put the hood on. he likes his hands out though so you can unfold the mitten things to get his hand out (the feet do the same). http://www.flickr.com/photos/mathowie/74552399/
too much information, i know
I have always put a blanket on Sophie and she's been fine...although I did worry sometimes. We would tuck her blankets under her so she wouldn't pull them up on her face. And, I think she could pull them off of her face, anyway. Are you still going to Dr. Gagner? If you are, she will give you a guide at your 6 month appt about food. I started Sophie on cereal just at night first, then started adding some other things in. Sophie didn't love the rice cereal so we do oatmeal because it's a little sweeter and she likes it. Then we kind of worked up to a fruit for breakfast, a snack around noon and then veggies for dinner, as well as bottles. Hope that helps!
I always used Carters sleeper for sleeping with an undershirt and socks underneath. Then used a portable heater in the room. The room stays about 68-70 degrees. I started solids with Oatmeal mixed with fruit. I gave it after their first bottle of the day (about an hour later). Hope you are doing well. Merry Christmas!
thanks for the tips girlies! i am feeling much better about things and have some great new ideas to try out!
